Martine McCutcheon

Martine McCutcheon was born in Hackney in 1976 and grew up in the area. She became a household name playing Tiffany Mitchell in EastEnders during the 1990s. She later launched a successful music career, reaching number one in the UK with “Perfect Moment”. She also starred alongside Hugh Grant in the film Love Actually.

Lionel Blair

Lionel Blair was a dancer, actor, choreographer and television presenter whose career lasted for decades. He became one of British television’s most recognisable entertainers, appearing in programmes including Name That Tune and Give Us a Clue. Blair lived in Hackney during part of his childhood after his family returned to Britain from Canada.

Patsy Palmer

Patsy Palmer was born in Bethnal Green and grew up in east London, with strong connections to Hackney through her early life and acting career. She became famous for playing Bianca Jackson in EastEnders. Her character became one of the programme’s best-known personalities, particularly through her turbulent relationship with Ricky Butcher.

Bree Runway

Marie Lloyd

Marie Lloyd was born Matilda Alice Victoria Wood in Hoxton in 1870. She became one of the biggest stars of the British music hall era. Paigey Cakey

Paigey Cakey, whose real name is Paige Meade, is a rapper and actress from Hackney. She became known through the UK grime and rap scene and has released numerous tracks and mixtapes. Her acting work includes appearances in Waterloo Road and Attack the Block.

Pauline Quirke

Pauline Quirke was born in Hackney in 1959. She started acting as a child and went on to become one of Britain’s familiar television actresses. She is best known for playing Sharon Theodopolopodous in the long-running comedy Birds of a Feather alongside Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph.

Barbara Windsor

Barbara Windsor was born Barbara Ann Deeks in Shoreditch in 1937, an area now partly within the London Borough of Hackney. She became an icon of British entertainment through the Carry On films and later as Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders. Her famous “Get outta my pub!” became closely associated with the character.

Trevor Nelson

Trevor Nelson was born in Hackney in 1964 and grew up in east London. He became one of Britain’s leading radio DJs and an important figure in bringing R&B and soul music to mainstream UK audiences. His broadcasting career has included major roles with BBC Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra and BBC Radio 2.

Alan Sugar

Alan Sugar was born in Hackney in 1947 and grew up on a council estate in the borough. He founded Amstrad in 1968 and built it into one of Britain’s best-known electronics companies. A later generation came to know him through BBC television’s The Apprentice. His journey from Hackney to becoming one of Britain’s best-known business figures makes him one of the borough’s most recognisable success stories.
